People who are genuinely happy most of the time are a conundrum to those who are not. Taken a step further, people with a positive disposition can be annoying to those who do not possess such a disposition.
The human brain is an enigmatic entity, one that even the brilliant minds struggle to understand. We still can’t explain the origin of thoughts, regardless if we know what produces them. Put another way: we know that the brain makes us aware of thoughts, but not a single person knows exactly where these thoughts come from.
One thing that scientists (and most others) do understand is that the brain is a creature of habit – it has a way of repeating itself. This is a benefit when those thoughts are positive and a hindrance when thoughts are negative.
The good news is that we can learn to be happier people if we make a conscious effort. The key words here are conscious effort. Not a single person can expect to alter their disposition, personality, outlook, etc., without first having a plan. One important component of such a plan is to know what not to do. Emotions play a key role in this respect – happy and unhappy people both have emotions, they are just of a different variety.

Happy people recognize that being impulsive can bring about an array of troubles. When one is impulsive they are more likely to overspend, overeat, lash out, become angry, and generally make bad decisions. On the other hand, when one is thoughtful, it becomes much easier to avoid harmful actions. Of all the negative consequences being impulsive brings about, the most injurious effect is the damage it beings to relationships. Happy people recognize that a particularly harmful word or deed can hurt someone, sometimes irreparably.
It’s very difficult, if not impossible, to be content with current circumstances when wishing for someone else’s. Genuinely happy people are appreciative and grateful for what they have, rather than what they could have. At its core, envy is a manifestation of unhappiness. Oppositely, being grateful and appreciative is an indicator of happiness. We’d all be better served if we chose the latter…just ask happy people.
Some people think that envy and jealousy are the same…they are not. Envy, as counterproductive of an emotion as it is, doesn’t usually correspond with betrayal or outrage as jealousy does. Simply put: enviousness occurs when we lack a desired attribute of someone else. Jealously is reacting to the perceived threat of losing someone. It goes without saying that happy people aren’t jealous often, if at all.
Revenge invokes harmful emotions and contributes absolutely nothing. In the short-term, thoughts or feelings of harming someone else – physically, emotionally, or in any other way – can bring about a sense of satisfaction. Carrying out such, however, often leaves much to be desired. After all, we can’t control what other people do, only how we choose to respond to what people do. Happy people don’t carry around this extra baggage.
To be clear, this is not a criticism of spirituality or religion. Instead, the thought process here is that relying on something, anything to fulfill us is often bears little fruit. Happy people realize that each individual inhabits the potential to create their own happiness. Don’t allow superstition to dictate what is or is not possible. Don’t give away your power.
It’s human nature to be fearful once in a while. To say “don’t fear anything” is, frankly, a stupid and irresponsible piece of advice. The appropriate advice is to not let fear take control. Do you find yourself obsessing and overanalyzing everything? Do you feel fatigued or anxious during those times? Overthinking has become a world epidemic that leads to severe depression and anxiety disorders.Through extensive research, psychology professor Susan Nolen-Hoeksema of the University of Michigan found that overthinking is prevalent in young and middle aged adults, with 73% of 25-35 year-olds identified as overthinkers. There are also more women (57%) than men (43%) as overthinkers.
HERE ARE 5 SIGNS THAT YOU ARE AN OVERTHINKER:
1. DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE DETACHING FROM YOUR THOUGHTS BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP?
Overthinkers cannot separate from the obsession of worrying. Insomnia is very common. You spend the night over analyzing the issue without getting to a solution. The thoughts replay themselves over and over until you feel paralyzed. Because you don’t rest, you are prominent to depression.
A healthy suggestion is to write your thoughts down before retiring. Keep a journal with your feeling and allow that to also be a way to release the nervous energy. Creating, painting or doing a hobby in the evening allows for the mind to detach from the thoughts while keeping your emotional body focused on something positive.
2. DO YOU LIVE IN FEAR OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN?
The overthinker feels paralyzed with anxiety worrying about the “what if’s” instead of living in the moment. In the research Nolen-Hoeksema found that this is the reason overthinkers are more likely to turn to alcohol and drugs in order to drown the constant worrying.
A good advice in dealing with those future fears is to give yourself a time everyday to overthink. If you are going to overthink give yourself permission to have an appointment with the thoughts. Use 15 minutest and time the session. During that time you can document the thoughts or speak out loud to yourself. Creating a habit and ritual will eventually break the other habits of overthinking all day long. It’s replacing one negative reinforcement with a positive action.
3. DO YOU CONSTANTLY OVER ANALYZE?
Overthinkers are quite exhausted and stricken by anxiety. Depression is always hanging over them. The overthinking mind feels out of control. They cannot grasp any solution. Dr. Pene Schmidt from the University of Melbourne’s School of Behaviour Science, suggests, “Remember, while we may not be able to control different situations in our lives, we can control the way we respond to them.”
She also suggests that when the mind starts to create negative thoughts to ask yourself, “What are the effects of these thoughts? Is there a solution that can be reached right now?”
When you find yourself over analyzing try to take deep breaths. Close your eyes and meditate for a few minutes. Think of a special place that you love and brings you joy. Stop projecting yourself in the future. You cannot manage what has not happened.
4. ARE YOU A PERFECTIONIST AND TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY?
Do you worry about failing? The overthinker usually has a low self-esteem full of doubts. The mind goes on overdrive thinking about how others will view you. Realize that no one is perfect. The imperfection is magnified in giving up without even trying to accomplish whatever is swirling in the mind. Striving for perfection is always a recipe for disaster. Take baby steps. See the big picture and shift those emotions from: “I can’t do this because I will be ridiculed” to “I am incredibly brave for doing this.”
5. DO YOU SECOND GUESS YOURSELF?
Overthinkers are indecisive and tend to live with many regrets. Overthinking is not a genetic disposition. It is a learned behavior. Therefore, when the mind starts to go to a place of unstructured thoughts it is because of past experiences. The overthinker believes that they will repeat the same mistake over and over through different scenarios. Panic then dictates every possible decision.
Avoid situations that can lead to the stressors of overthinking. You can determine what causes you to stress over a particular decision. If you did something one way in the past then try doing it another way now. Work on goals and map out how you will get there without second guessing every move. Do your research. Researching dissipates the fear of the unknown.
Forming positive thoughts and actions diminishes the fears of stress. In order to stop the overthinking mind, keep yourself busy with positive reinforcements: exercise, creating, sharing, being outdoors, and reaching out to friends and family. Having a support system helps eliminate the negative thought pattern.

Your gut instincts are providing external messages so you can quiet the mind and pay attention. Signs can also come through songs, passages in books, and even a word from a stranger at the check out isle in the supermarket. It’s amazing how your intuition can transpire outer distractions to force you to take notice.

Another way that intuition communicates with us is through silence. You may feel the desire to be alone, or meditate. During these times serenity takes a hold of the spirit and you get answers. Authentic truth will show itself when you detach from the heavy mind chatter. At times just taking a walk outside in nature helps calm us down. Sitting by water elevates the senses to open up and we are brought to a state of bliss.

There are times that refusing to pay attention to our gut gives us physical pain or ailments. Our spiritual, emotional and physical bodies are one. When we are out of balance with all three, physical issues start to appear. Louise L. Hay, inspirational author and speaker, says, “Every thought we think is creating our future.” When we go against the gut instincts we may pay a hefty price in our bodies. This avoidance will show up in ailments, diseases, or something as simple as an ankle sprain. Your higher self will speak in many forms just to get your attention. If you follow your intuition, it will never lead you wrong.
Your physical body will always let you know what is happening. Take time to connect with your guidance. We get so busy trying to accomplish things that we forget the toll it takes on a physical level. For example, having chest pains or shallow breathing may be an opportunity to stop and connect with your guidance. What are you aching for? What issues in your life are taking your breath away? These are warning signs from the universe and they should not be ignored.

IF YOU NEED MORE HELP WITH ANXIETY, TRY THE FOLLOWING BREATHING TECHNIQUE:
Controlling your breathing through one nostril at a time is known as Nadi Shodhana in Sanskrit. Spot.pcc.edu says that it is also called “the “Sweet Breath,” “Sukha Pranayama” (Sukha translates as comfortable or happy), “Channel Purification Breath,” or “Alternate Nostril Breath.” This breathing technique is also good for promoting clear thinking and balancing the brain hemispheres as well as relieving anxiety.
To do alternate nostril breathing, curl your index and middle finger of wither hand into your palm, with your thumb, ring and pinky fingers sticking out. The ring finger and thumb are what you will use to close each nostril with. Use this hand as a pincher to gently press the outside of each nostril.
Spot.pcc.edu suggests the following pattern to achieve alternate nostril breathing:
“Curl index and middle finger of the right hand into the palm, forming a “pincer” with thumb and ring finger (little finger is “superfluous”). Take a deep inhale and exhale, then gently close the right nostril with the thumb, inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril. In the moment of pause after the inhale and before the exhale, gently close the left nostril with the ring finger, release the thumb from the right nostril and exhale through the right nostril just as slow.
Observe the moment of pause after the exhale and before the next inhale, then inhale slowly and deeply through the right nostril. In the moment of pause after the inhale and before the exhale, gently close the right nostril again with the thumb, release the ring finger from the left nostril and exhale through the left nostril just as slow. Again, observe the moment of pause after the exhale and before the next inhale, then inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril.
Continue breathing alternately through one nostril only, always closing the other nostril and releasing the one that was just closed in the moment of pause after an inhale and before the next exhale.”
