Religious Importance

In Hinduism

In Hinduism, Akshaya Tritiya has a great significant. On this day, Lord Vishnu took birth on the earth as Parashuram to preserve the Goddess Earth from selfish and brutal monarchs. On the same day, Vyas started writing Mahabharata with Lord Ganesha. Thousands of years ago, Tretayuga started on an Akshaya Tritiya day and River Ganga came to earth from the heaven. Thus there are numerous reasons for Hindus to consider Akshaya Tritiya as a holyday.

It is on the same day that Kubera (Vaisravana) gave so much wealth and he became the God of wealth by praying Lord Shiva at Shivapuram. There is a story in Bhagavata that Sudama (Kuchela) visited his childhood friend Shri Krishna and on his return he noticed that his poor hut was turned into a large beautiful palace with lots of money in it. Sudama became rich on this auspicious day. Goddess Annapoorna devi was born on this day. Yudhishtira got Akshaya Patra (the never ending vessel) from Surya Deva during their Vanavasa on this divine day. Cruel Dusasana took off Draupadi’s cloth on this day and Lord Krishna covered his body with an unending veil. It is believed that Kerala and Goa were raised from the sea by Parashurama. So this day, owing to it is Parashurma Jayanti, very significant to that regions.

Holy bath in rivers are usual this day. People consider dipping in river Ganga is more divine enough to wash off every sins they do in their life time. On this day people do special pujas. It is believed that even Kubera pray to Goddess Lekshmi. So this day, Kubera Lekshmi Puja is performed along with the Sudarsana Kubera Yantra which is a symbol of Kubera.

In Odisha, farmers prepare field and begin to cultivate this day as it is the most fruitful day to start anything. The knowledge and wealth that is gained on this day must be very much useful. Both of them will not go in vain.
In Jainism
People following Jainism consider Akshaya Tritiya as the most divine day. It’s associated with Rishabha Deva (Lord Adinatha), the first thirthankara out of ternty- four. People doing varshi tapa (year- long fasting) ends I by drinking sugarcane juice.
Akshaya Tritiya day is auspicious in Jainism. Lord Adinatha left all the physical pleasures and went to penance by dividing the kingdom to his hundred and one sons. One of them was Gomateswara Bahubali whose large statue was unveiled at Sravan Balgola and Chakravarthi Bharatha.

Rishabhadeva penanced for six months without food and even water. He was the first sage of that era. Jaina monks do not own anything and not even cook for themselves. They don’t ask for it. Monks accept food from wherever it is offered. So after the long tapasya, the first thirthankara went to accept food. He was the king. So people offered him gold, silver, cows, horses and their precious assets. They couldn’t understand the real need of a monk because he was the first at the time. People even offered their daughter for the pleasure of their King. But he was seeking some food which is only need to lead an ascetic life. At last, King Sravana Kumar realized his need and gave him sugarcane juice. He accepted and drank it. That was how his penance came to an end. From that time, people who follow Jainism consider sugarcane juice as a divine food.
